Located in Union County, North Carolina, Monroe has a population of nearly 36,400 residents. As the county seat, Monroe is part of the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill, NC-SC Metro area, and the community saw an increase of nearly 10,000 residents from 2000 to 2010. This community consists of 24.9 square miles of total area, almost all of which is land. Monroe is located 22 miles southeast of Charlotte and 118 miles west of Fayetteville.

There are a variety of attractions available in Monroe that both residents and visitors can enjoy. The Why Not an American Ark is a popular destination for animal enthusiasts due to its petting zoo and equestrian events, as is the Cold Blooded Encounters Reptile Zoo. Horse lovers can also learn how to ride at the Everlong Equestrian Center. Golf fans often enjoy a tee time at Monroe City Golf Course, Stonebridge Golf Club, or Rolling Hills Country Club.

Monroe also hosts a variety of festivals and events throughout the year. Each spring, the city holds the Beach, Blues and BBQ Festival, which features musical performances, food vendors, carnival rides, and a corn hole tournament. The historic downtown area also hosts a Christmas tree lighting celebration and Halloween activities for children.

Monroe and the rest of the Charlotte area are located in the path of subtropical moisture that arrives from the Gulf of Mexico. This results in ample precipitation during the year, and while this is distributed somewhat evenly, summer is usually the wettest season. Summers in Monroe are also hot and humid, so a reliable home cooling system is needed to keep residents safe and comfortable. Likewise, while winters are cool and short, several inches of snow do fall each season, so a heat pump or furnace is needed to keep homes warm and to prevent pipes from freezing.
